Useful Information
Take some tips from us and your Japan winter adventure will run without a hitch...
What to bring
From December to March temperatures range from -5ºC to -15ºC during the day in Niseko and from 5ºC to -10ºC in Hakuba.
For this reason, you will require warm gear and we suggest the following:
- Double lens goggles (orange colour lenses)
- Thermal underwear
- Polar fleece neck gaiter
- Warm waterproof gloves
- Warm ski gear
- Powder straps or deep powder tracers for skis
- Swimming costumes for indoor pool
- Bath towel
Handy tips
- A visa is not required for stays under 90 days.
- Ensure that your passport is valid for longer than your period of stay.
- Ensure that you have taken out appropriate travel insurance that includes full winter sports cover.
- Arrange to purchase some yen (in cash; see below) before departure.
- Be sure to pack a warm jacket at the top of your bag as it will be cold when you arrive in Japan.
- You will not need to get any special jabs for visiting Japan.
- Tap water in Japan is safe to drink.
- For Europeans and North Americans a visa is not required for stays under 90 days. Other nationalities should check with the Japanese embassy or consulate before travelling as a visa may be required.
Money
Yen is the Japanese currency. As Japan is still a cash economy, we emphasise the importance of purchasing yen in cash before arriving at the resort.
At the time of our last update the exchange rate was: GB £1 = 173.160 Japanese Yen and US $1 = 120.000 Japanese Yen. Check the current exchange rate here
Japan is one of the safest countries in the world to travel in, so as long as you are sensible, carrying cash is not a problem.
- Purchase yen in cash before you depart or when in Tokyo
- All Japan's Post Office ATMs now accept international Visa cards for cash withdrawals.
- Travellers cheques are accepted at local banks
- Cards are accepted in some stores for the purchase of goods
- No cash advances are available from cards in the Niseko area (no PO ATMs in this area).
To budget for your stay, you will need to account for the following:
Lunch: a typical lunch will cost about 1000yen
Onsen: trips to the onsen will cost about 500yen
You will also need to take into account any day trips you may have planned.

If you are renting ski or snow board equipment, then please use the following prices as a guide:
